Youth and Women Invited for 3rd Annual MN Mentor Pheasant Hunt

Minnesota is expanding opportunities for first-time and novice pheasant hunters. The 3rd Annual Minnesota Department of Natural Resources & Pheasants Forever Mentor Pheasant Hunt this October will again be open to youth ages 12-17, and for the first time will include a women's mentored pheasant hunt. The deadline for youth and women to apply for the hunt lottery is Wednesday, September 8th.

This autumn, hunters in South Dakota will enjoy pheasant numbers that continue to be some of the best in the state's history. The 2010 brood survey count shows a small increase from the 2009 survey.
The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department completed its annual pheasant brood survey in mid-August, and tallied a statewide pheasants-per-mile count that is up about 3 percent from last year.

I can't think of a single factor that has changed the character of upland bird hunting on the High Plains as profoundly as the implementation of the Conservation Reserve Program. And it's hard to imagine federal policy that addresses complex matters of farm belt economics, wildlife biology and sportsman satisfaction concluding with a program satisfactory to everyone.

Pheasants Forever and partners kick off Minnesota's 8th annual Build a Wildlife Area campaign this week. Events include a dedication ceremony for a new public hunting area on Tuesday and a fundraising phone-a-thon on KFAN radio Thursday night. In eight years, the Minnesota Build a Wildlife Area campaigns have led in the creation of 10 different acquisitions covering a total of 3,165 acres that have been opened to public hunting and outdoor recreation as federal Waterfowl Production Areas or state Wildlife Management Areas.
